Prospective Candidates and agents

Information for prospective candidates and agents, including a full timetable, is available on the Electoral Commission website: 

Further information about becoming a district councillor can be found at  LGA: Be a councillor. Guidance for prospective parish councillors is available at NALC 'Make a Change' 

There will be briefings for prospective candidates and agents and a briefing for parish clerks with scheduled elections:

  •  District agents and independent District candidates – Thursday 29 February, 5pm start
  •  Town/Parish Clerks with scheduled elections – Wednesday 6 March, 5pm start

Further briefings for appointed agents and parishes with contested elections will then be held after the close of nominations and in the week before polling day:

  • District agents and independent District candidates – Wednesday 10 April, 5pm start
  • Town/Parish Clerks with contested elections, and candidates in those elections – Thursday 11 April, 5pm start
  • Final briefing, for all District agents, independent candidates, Town/Parish clerks with contested elections and Town/Parish candidates – Tuesday 23 April, 5pm start.
  • The briefings will be held virtually via MS Teams, and we expect them to be around an hour to 90 minutes.

Candidates can request a copy of the register of electors and absent votes list for the area they are standing. Please note that these can only be supplied once the Notice of Election has been published.

  • Last Date for Receipt of Voter Authority Certificate Applications – 5:00pm on Wednesday 24 April 2024

  • Police and Crime Commissioner Count – Saturday 4 May
  • District and Parish Councillors Take up Office – Tuesday 7 May 2024

Police and Crime Commissioner election

The Police Area Returning Officer (PARO) is responsible for the overall conduct of the election of a Police and Crime Commission. This includes liaising with candidates and agents at Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

The Chief Executive of West Berkshire Council has been appointed as the PARO for the Thames Valley Police Area. Prospective candidates should contact the West Berkshire Council Electoral Services Team for further information.
