Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered
What is the Crown Walk and Pioneer Square improvement project?
The project is a two-phase initiative to enhance the appearance, safety, and usability of Crown Walk and Pioneer Square—two key pedestrian spaces in the heart of Bicester.
Why was Crown Walk and Pioneer Square chosen for this project?
We’ve allocated dedicated funding specifically for Crown Walk and Pioneer Square to address longstanding concerns and create a more welcoming, attractive environment for everyone. You can find a more detailed explanation on our Why Crown Walk & Pioneer Square? page.
Where has the funding come from?
The improvements are funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which has been specifically allocated to enhance town centres and increase footfall. This funding cannot be redirected to other projects and is only available until March 2026.
When will the work begin and how long will it take?
The project is due to start in summer 2025, with completion expected by spring 2026.
-
Phase one will run through summer into early autumn.
-
Phase two will begin in winter and finish by the end of spring 2026.
What does phase one include?
Phase one will introduce new seating and planting areas, creating calm spaces for visitors to relax and enjoy the greenery.
What does phase two include?
Phase two will bring in ambient lighting to support year-round use of the space, particularly as daylight hours shorten, and children's play equipment to make the space more interactive, we also plan to install more seating and planting.
This phase will also see the installation of art murals inspired by Bicester’s garden town status and local heritage.
Will the improvements be accessible to everyone?
Yes. Accessibility is important to the council, and we’re confident these changes will benefit everyone, particularly those with mobility needs, by reducing traffic and increasing available seating.
Will there be any disruption during the works?
Some minor disruption is expected, but we'll work to keep this to a minimum. Access to local businesses and pedestrian routes will be maintained throughout.
Who is developing the plans for improvement?
The project is led by Cherwell District Council.
Can we stop the traffic flow through Pioneer Square and prevent illegal parking?
We're working closely with local businesses to ensure all operational bollards are maintained and used to restrict traffic flow outside of permitted access hours.
The Council's Property team continues to explore solutions to reduce illegal parking and improve safety for everyone.
