Council Tax: £150 energy rebate

Energy rebate

As part of the government’s initiative to help households with rising energy costs, they have announced a £150 Council Tax rebate for certain households.

We aim to make rebate payments (or rebate by Council Tax account credit) throughout June and July. To enable us to process applications and rebates as quickly as possible, please do not contact the council to request an update on your application progress before the end of July.

All payments will be completed by September.

Who can get this £150 rebate?

  • you must be the liable person for council tax
  • the property must be in band A-D inclusive
  • the property must be your main home as of 1 April 2022

If your property is in band E and you are eligible for a disabled band reduction, then you will also get the £150 payment.  Properties are not eligible if they are second homes, houses of multiple occupation (HMO) or unoccupied. Check your Council Tax band.

Received a letter?  Claim now

If you don't pay your council tax by Direct Debit you will have received a letter from us containing a passcode unique to your property which allows you to apply online.  You will be re-directed to an external system to complete your form and you will be asked for your Account Reference, Property Reference Number (PRN) and Unique Passcode. Please apply as soon as possible to prevent the £150 automatically being transferred to your Council Tax account.

When completing your application, you will have two options:

  1. For the payment to be transferred to your Council Tax account – choose £150 Council Tax Rebate – Account Credit
  2. To receive £150 payment direct into your bank account – choose £150 Council Tax Rebate – Non Direct Debit Payment

We aim to make payment by BACS and rebates will be paid during June and July. All payments will be completed by September 2022.

Direct Debit payees - automatic payment

If you pay your council tax by Direct Debit you will have received a payment to the bank account used to pay your council Tax bill. If you have not yet received this please email council.tax@cherwell-dc.gov.uk

Changes in circumstances

The effective date for the council tax rebate is 1 April 2022. If there's a change to the council tax band of your home after this date, this will not be taken into consideration.

The exception to this is newly-built homes awaiting a valuation band. We can make a payment if:

  • the effective date is 1 April 2022 or before, and
  • you meet the eligibility criteria

Once you have received payment, if you believe you do not meet the eligibility criteria above please notify council.tax@cherwell-dc.gov.uk quoting the bank account details the payment was credited to.

If you do not meet the eligibility criteria above the grant may be liable for recovery.
