Downsizing – could this be a solution for you?
We understand that your housing needs change over time and that’s something Cherwell District Council may be able to help you with.
You may no longer need the size of your current home because your children have left home (leaving spare bedrooms), or you may want a simpler life and to reduce your rent and household costs. Or perhaps you’re finding it difficult to maintain the size of your home or garden.
Many of the social housing providers who provide affordable housing in Cherwell offer schemes to help their tenants downsize and find a home which is more suitable for their current needs.
Where to start?
Firstly, you will need to join our Housing register called Cherwell HomeChoice; we can help you to do this! We can then help you identify what type of homes and what locations will meet your needs and support you to find the right home.
If you join our housing register to downsize, there is no obligation for you to move or accept the first offer of another home. You may want to keep a spare room for when guests come to stay and as long as you can afford this (subject to a financial assessment by the landlord) and are downsizing by more than one bedroom that is possible.
For those wanting to downsize we can prioritise your application for housing and a Band 1 will be applied to your application.
It can seem a daunting prospect, but the Council and our housing providers can support you in this. Many offer incentives like contributing towards moving costs and other ways to help you to move.
If you think this is something you want to consider, then these are some of the providers that offer schemes, is your landlord one of them? If you can’t see your landlord listed, please contact us.
