Reconsiderations and appeals

Appeal a decision

Making an appeal

If you disagree with a decision made on your housing benefit and/or council tax reduction claim you can challenge the decision by submitting a reconsideration letter within one month of the original decision.

You have two options:

1. You can ask us to reconsider. You must write to us within one month of the date of the letter, giving full reasons. We will look at our decision again and advise you of the outcome.

Cherwell District Council
PO BOX 27
Banbury

2. You can appeal against the decision. Please write to us within one month of the date of our decision. We will look at our decision again and tell you the outcome. If we do not change our decision we will pass your case to Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS).

Please note your appeal letter must be signed and state the word 'appeal'. You must also confirm what decision you are appealing and why you are appealing. Your appeal letter should be sent to us in the first instance, as you cannot appeal directly to HMCTS

If you do not understand the decision made on your claim you can call us on 01295 227002 or benefits@cherwell-dc.gov.uk.
