Rates of Pay
The rates of pay vary depending on the job role and the type of poll.
For the elections taking place in May 2026, pay rates are as follows:
- Polling station Presiding Officers £288, mandatory online training £20, in-person briefing & ballot box collection £20, and mileage at HMRC rates
- Polling station Poll Clerk £227, mandatory online training £20 and mileage at HMRC rates
- Verification/count staff £18.50 an hour and mileage at HMRC rates
- Postal vote openers £14.10 an hour. No mileage is paid.
All fees are subject to tax. For elections held in May, payment for working being made directly into your bank account in June. Exact arrangements will be advised before each election.
