Following the changes to waste collection services, Cherwell residents have recycled more than 2,000 tonnes of glass, helping conserve raw materials, save energy and support the economy.

The achievement has contributed to Cherwell District Council’s Environmental Services team being shortlisted for the MRW National Recycling Awards 2026 in two categories: Campaign of the Year and Local Authority Success.

The 2,000 tonne figure has been reached in less than a year since the council introduced kerbside collections for glass bottles and jars in January 2026. In addition to the kerbside collections a further 484 tonnes have been collected from bottle banks.

Councillor Alisa Russell, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: "We were delighted to introduce kerbside glass recycling collections at the start of the year, and recycling over 2,000 tonnes in such a short space of time is a fantastic achievement.

“This milestone reflects the positive response from residents, alongside the hard work and dedication of the teams who have helped make the service such a success.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in securing these award nominations, but most importantly thank Cherwell residents for embracing this initiative. It shows that when we work together we can increase recycling, reduce waste and make a real difference to our communities.”

The awards acknowledge the extensive communications and engagement campaign that helped residents adapt to the change, and the significant operational transformation required to deliver the new service.

Being shortlisted in two national categories for this initiative is a significant achievement. It recognises the hard work, dedication and collaboration of everyone involved in developing, implementing and promoting the service, as well as the everyday efforts of those collecting the additional recycling generated since its introduction.

The winners will be announced on 1 December 2026 at an awards ceremony in London.
