Council leader writes to government for action on fridge freezer recycling

Our council leader, Cllr Lesley McLean, has written to the government calling for urgent action to address the national fridge and freezer recycling crisis, which has forced us to suspend collections.

In her letter to Emma Hardy MP, Minister of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, she is urging the government to:

  • Step in and restore out-of-action recycling sites for fridges and freezers
  • Speed up the processing of new licensed sites
  • Relax storage requirements while maintaining health and safety levels
  • Work with councils to secure approved storage facilities
  • Provide clear updates to communities and councils on when the issue will be resolved

These measures would help us resume fridge and freezer collections for residents as quickly as possible.
