On Tuesday, 16 June, Cherwell District Council’s executive approved the allocation of £250k from the Strategic Development Fund to support two key projects: the development of a new economic plan for the district, and a new masterplan for Bicester town centre.
The funding will support increased investment in the local economy and identify further opportunities for growth, including how the council can continue to support small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs.
Councillor Lesley McLean, Leader of the council, said: “This approval for funding signifies our dedication to putting localism at the heart of what we do. We are committed to delivering a stronger and more resilient local economy, where we’re investing in creating vibrant and thriving places and new opportunities for our businesses, residents and communities.”
The Bicester masterplan will continue to build upon the recent regeneration of the town centre, which has seen improvements to Bure Place, Wesley Square, Crown Walk and Pioneer Square, with new planters installed, bee-friendly flora planted and streets cleansed.
The district-wide economic plan will seek to drive sustainable and inclusive growth across key foundational sectors such as logistics, manufacturing, retail and the visitor economy, alongside emerging strengths in advanced manufacturing, clean technology and future mobility. It will provide strategic continuity and clarity, ensuring Cherwell’s economic priorities remain visible, coordinated, and investment-ready.
