Strong start to Cherwell glass recycling following new initiative

Household recycling in north Oxfordshire has seen a boost thanks to residents’ embracing a new kerbside glass collection service.

In January, Cherwell District Council introduced glass recycling as part of its household blue bin collection service, in line with new, simpler recycling legislation.

Over the first three months of operation, the initiative has driven a significant increase in dry recycling volumes across Cherwell. The latest data show that 392 more tonnes of recycling were collected in the first quarter of the year than in the same period in 2025.

Ed Potter, Assistant Director of Environmental Services at Cherwell District Council, said: “We are delighted to have seen such an enthusiastic start to our kerbside glass recycling service. It is wonderful to see so many residents embracing the opportunity to recycle their glass bottles and jars from the comfort of their own home.

“This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the council's commitment to environmental sustainability and waste reduction. By integrating glass collection into the existing blue bin service, we’ve streamlined the recycling process for households, making it easier for residents to dispose of glass responsibly.”

The introduction of kerbside glass collection represents a significant step forward in improving the district's overall recycling rates and building a more sustainable future for Cherwell.

Glass collected will be taken to a sorting centre, where it will be separated from other dry recyclables. Larger pieces will be sorted by colour for further processing, and smaller pieces will be used for road aggregate or shot-blasting material.

The promising start will count towards the council’s annual 2025/26 recycling rates, which will be published next year.

The council encourages all residents to continue separating their glass and keep up the brilliant work.
