Christmas changes to kerbside collections in Cherwell

Residents in north Oxfordshire are urged to check their waste and recycling collection dates ahead of the festive period.

Due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, Cherwell District Council is changing its usual household kerbside collection days to the following:

  • Collections due on Thursday, 25 December (Christmas Day) will take place on Monday, 22 December

  • Collections due on Friday, 26 December (Boxing Day) will take place on Saturday, 27 December

  • Collections due on Thursday, 1 January (New Year’s Day) will take place on Saturday, 3 January

Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Each Christmas we inevitably see an increase in the amount of waste and recycling being generated as families and friends gather to celebrate, socialise and enjoy festive feasts.

“To ensure collections run smoothly over the festive bank holidays, some green, blue and food bin collections will take place on an alternative day. It is important that residents double-check their collection day, as it may be different from usual.

“As we come to the end of 2025, it is an apt time to reflect on the hard work our waste collection teams carry out across the year, especially during December, as the volume of waste increases. I’m sure residents would join me in recognising this and saying a massive thank you to the crews for everything they do.”

Garden waste collections will be temporarily suspended from Monday, 22 December to Saturday, 3 January to ensure all the extra waste can be collected.

Any residents needing to dispose of garden waste during this period can do so at their local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Further information about recycling services in the district and the new festive collection dates is online at www.cherwell.gov.uk/recycling

Residents will also be able to conveniently recycle any glass items gathered over the festive period. From 1 January 2026, all empty jars and bottles just need to be placed in the blue bin ready for their collection day.
