Cherwell District Council’s commercial waste team was named Team of the Year at the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Celebration Awards, held on Wednesday, 8 October.
The team helped a growing number of customers recycle 410 tonnes of mixed dry waste and glass in 2024/25. They offer flexible pricing options, tailored to the size and needs of the business, and their service includes audits to reduce general waste and save money.
Councillor Ian Middleton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “It’s fantastic to see our business waste team achieve national recognition at the LARAC awards. More and more local businesses are coming to us for a commercial waste solution. This is a testament to the great customer service the team offers, but also to the increasing awareness among businesses that they can make a real difference for the planet and their community when they reduce their residual waste and recycle more.
“By giving impartial and ethical advice on emissions reduction, recycling training, and waste audits, we’re tapping into our customers’ desire to reduce their environmental impact, and it’s great to see that innovative work acknowledged with a LARAC award.
"I'd like to add my personal thanks to the team for their continued hard work and dedication, and congratulations on their well-deserved award."
An increasing number of businesses are using the council’s commercial waste service for regular, ongoing collections, but the team is also generating growth by offering tailored, one-off services for local events.
The 2025 LARAC Celebration Awards acknowledged the achievements of local authority recycling teams, individuals and partnerships driving positive environmental change across the UK.
Award winners were decided by a panel of judges, including representatives from LARAC, the Local Government Association and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (which operates as WRAP).
