Cherwell District Council is commissioning three large murals for a walkway between Sheep Street and Pioneer Square, a well-used pedestrian link that connects key areas in the town centre.

The project aims to transform the currently plain space into a vibrant and welcoming creative corridor, celebrating Bicester’s identity as a Garden Town.

Artists are encouraged to reflect the Garden Town theme in their designs, celebrating three concepts of: nature, green spaces and sustainability, community life and local culture, and Bicester’s rich heritage and sense of place.

The council is particularly keen to hear from Bicester-based artists or those with a strong connection to the area.

Councillor Lesley McLean, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, Regeneration, and Property, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to brighten up an area in the town centre and celebrate the things that make Bicester unique. By bringing together creativity, colour and local pride, we can transform this everyday walkway into something that reflects the spirit of our town. I encourage local artists to get involved and help us deliver this exciting project.”

Artists are asked to submit:

  • Examples of their previous work (including murals if relevant)

  • A short statement outlining their initial concept and approach to the Garden Town theme

  • An estimated budget and timeline

  • A brief artist biography

The murals must be weatherproof and durable, suitable for outdoor display.

All submissions can be emailed to Bicester@Cherwell-dc.gov.uk and must be received by 5pm on Friday, 1 August. Further information can be found online.
