Last year, Cherwell District Council worked with partners to support eligible local residents in claiming pension credit and winter fuel payments, providing them with education and assistance.
Following the campaign, statistics revealed that between November 2024 and February 2025, fifty residents of pension age claimed pension credit and winter fuel payments. This translated to £194,477 in additional support that residents received.
Councillor Lesley McLean, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance, Property, and Regeneration, said: “Residents’ wellbeing is of key importance to us and we are incredibly proud of the positive impact this campaign has had.
“Ensuring that pensioners receive the support they are entitled to is a priority for us, especially during the colder months when financial pressures can be most acute.
“By identifying those eligible and helping them navigate the claims process, we’ve accessed nearly £195,000 in vital support, so it’s a big thank you to all our officers and partners for their hard work to make this possible.”
Over the last winter, in addition to £184,477 worth of pension credit being claimed by residents in Cherwell, £10,000 in winter fuel payments was also paid to residents.
Cherwell District Council will work with Age UK on another campaign over the summer to help residents access support and find out if they are eligible to apply for pension credit.
