The next stage in developing the preferred design for Bicester Market Square will soon commence, following successful design workshops and public engagement events held in early 2025.

Cherwell District Council invited residents and local businesses to have their say on three design options in February. Feedback covered topics such as: enhancing pedestrian space, improving town centre connectivity, optimising traffic movement and avoiding a major reduction in parking.
This feedback has influenced the selection of a design that combines the opportunity to increase green space and community areas, while maintaining essential parking.
Further engagement on this preferred design will be undertaken and final designs will go to the council Executive for approval.
Councillor Lesley McLean, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance, Property, and Regeneration, said: “I’m delighted to share this project update, and also give my thanks for the collaboration and valuable input from our residents, local businesses, and partners. This community-focused project is a great example of localism in action and creates further opportunities for growth and a better-connected community.
“This is part of our vision, which seeks to create a district where businesses can thrive, communities feel empowered and supported, and residents can enjoy a clean, green environment. It forms part of a holistic plan across this area.
“The development of the project will continue to be monitored by the Bicester Area Oversight Group, which will work closely with local residents, forums and businesses to deliver the new area priority plan. In the meantime, survey work will begin to develop a finalised design over the next few months, which will then go out to tender for the contractor to build out the design. We estimate that it will take approximately 12-18 months for the pre-project development work, with archaeological investigations being an important factor in this historic area. The project programme estimates to start the work in the Market Square itself in Spring 2026 and will take around 12-18 months to complete.”
People can see the project plans at the Friday Bicester Market on Friday, 23 May, where the council’s Bicester delivery team will be available to answer any questions.
Residents and businesses can also register for email updates or contact the delivery team with any enquiries, and further information can be found online.
