Councillor Andrew McHugh, Portfolio Holder for Cleaner and Greener Communities, said: “We know that many residents spend the festive period socialising, celebrating and reconnecting with friends and family. This will inevitably lead to the accumulation of extra waste and recycling, and to prioritise this, green, blue and food bin collections will continue one day later than usual.

“Our waste collection teams work tirelessly across the year and will work especially hard during December as the volume of waste increases. I’m sure residents would join me in recognising this work and sending a massive thank you for everything they do.”

Garden waste collections will be temporarily suspended from Tuesday 26 December to Friday 5 January to ensure all the extra waste can be collected.

Some garden waste may gather over this time, and residents unable to wait for the next collection can take their garden waste to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Residents who celebrate Christmas by decorating and displaying real trees can dispose of them kerbside from Tuesday 9 January to Friday 19 January. Trees will need to be put out on their blue bin day with all lights and decorations removed, and any tree over 5ft tall must be cut into smaller sections of 2ft.

Residents can also replant any trees with roots in their gardens or use any composters they may have.
