Retrospective building regulations

Retrospective building regulations are referred to as regularisation.

A regularisation certificate application is for work that has already been carried out without building regulations consent and started after 11 November 1985.

The purpose of the process is to regularise the unauthorised works and to obtain a certificate of regularisation. Depending on the circumstances, exposure, removal and/or rectification of works may be necessary to establish compliance with the building regulations. There are fees for this service.

You can use the link at the bottom of this page to submit your application. Alternatively, you can all our building control service on 01295 227006 to discuss your individual circumstances before submitting a regularisation application. We are open from 9:00am to 5:15pm Monday to Friday.

The application must include:

  • A completed ‘Regularisation Certificate’ application form
  • A completed ‘Regularisation Certificate Notes and Checklist’ form
  • A completed ‘Regularisation 18(3) Relevant Requirement Information’ form
  • Payment
