Scheduled monuments and landscapes

Across the district, there are:

  • 37 scheduled monuments
  • 7 registered parks and gardens and
  • a registered battlefield

The County Council is responsible for maintaining records of the archaeological sites in Oxfordshire. The most important archaeological remains are designated as Scheduled Monuments by Historic England. To find a scheduled monument on a map you can use the Historic England’s mapping system.

There are many other undesignated sites of archaeological interest varying in significance from nationally to locally important remains. More information on these can be found on Oxfordshire County Council's Historic Environment Record.

The character of the landscape in the district is an essential element of what makes it special. The Oxfordshire Wildlife and Landscape study has just been completed and includes Historic Landscape Characterisation to examine the historic and archaeological processes which have influenced the modern landscape.
