Temporary changes

World Cup Alcohol licensing permissions

The World Cup kicks off this June in the US, Canada and Mexico, which include time zones at least five hours behind the UK.

The Government has made temporary changes to alcohol licensed premises in England and Wales to allow alcohol licensed premises to stay open later when England or Scotland teams are playing in world Cup matches.

On match days involving England and/or Scotland, alcohol licensed premises will be allowed to be extend their trading hours as follows:

  • From 23:00 to 01:00 for matches with kick-off times between 17:00 and 21:00
  • From 23:00 to 02:00 for matches with kick-off times after 21:00 up to 22:00

These alcohol sales and opening permission extensions apply to:

  • Round of 32
  • Round of 16
  • Quarter-finals
  • Semi-finals
  • Bronze medal match
  • Final

However, please note that matches starting before 17:00 or after 22:00, and all matches which do not involve England or Scotland teams playing, are excluded from the permitted trading extensions, and venues will need to apply for TENs to open, or remain open, past their current permitted trading times.

Venues without existing alcohol licensing permission must apply for a TEN regardless of the Government licensing relaxation of alcohol licensing permissions.
