Leisure centre pass up for grabs by putting your best foot forward

Kidlington residents are into the final stretch of a project to co-design the village’s new walking routes.

And for the last leg, there’s a chance to win a month’s family pass to Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre, by getting out and exploring the circuits.

The wayfinding paths are being introduced this summer by K5 Better Together partners, including Cherwell District Council and Kidlington Parish Council. Based on the popular 5K ‘blue line’ health walks in Bicester, the trails aim to improve physical and mental wellbeing while enhancing community connectivity by encouraging people to move around their neighbourhood by foot.

Rosie Rowe, Cherwell District Council’s Assistant Director for Healthy Place Shaping said: “Encouraging people to walk or cycle is a key priority for Cherwell. Providing dedicated, safe, pedestrianised routes will offer a real boost to Kidlington residents, improving people’s health and supporting residents to swap local trips in the car for more active travel.”

Funding has been awarded from Sport England to introduce a number of walking routes around the village. The proposed circuits have been designed with families in mind, ranging from a shorter village-centre walk to a longer 5km route for those inspired by the NHS Couch to 5k app. Most of the paths start from Exeter Hall, allowing walkers the chance to hop onto another network if they want a slightly longer route.

Residents are now being invited to help finalise the routes by test-walking them and offering feedback. There’s even a chance to win a month’s family pass to Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre, by taking a selfie on one of the circuits, posting it to Facebook and tagging in @K5BetterTogether.

Ideas are also welcome on ways the paths can be marked, as well as interesting activities which can be added to the routes, to make them more fun for families who use them.

For anyone needing additional help to navigate the routes, guided walks are available from the K5 Better Together team. For more information, email healthyplaceshaping@cherwell-dc.gov.uk

Final entries for the prize draw to win a month’s family pass to Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre need to be made by midnight on Monday 4 May.
