Please be advised that due to ongoing construction works for Castle Quay Waterfront, the Spiceball Leisure Centre footbridge will be closing from Monday 23 September.
Published: Thursday, 5th September 2019
This is a temporary closure, and is necessary to allow the construction of a car park which will form part of the new Lidl store.
We would like to clarify that the footbridge is not being demolished and replaced. Alteration works will be taking place to a small section of the bridge which, in the longer-term, will improve the connectivity of the Spiceball Leisure Centre to the town centre. The bridge is constructed from steel and brick, and it is this brick section on the Castle Quay shopping centre side of the river that is being changed.
There are a number of alternative routes to the Spiceball Leisure Centre, utilising existing pathways alongside the creation of new pathways which will be completed before the footbridge closes. These pedestrian pathways will meet Highway Standards in line with the existing pathways around the town centre and signage will be in place. Alternative car parking is available at Riverside Car Park and Compton Car Park, along with short stay parking at The Mill and Chamberlaine Court.
It is expected that the footbridge could be closed for up to 18 months, although we will be working as fast as possible with contractor McLaren to open the footbridge earlier than this, with minimal disruption. We will keep the local community informed of progress.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and visitors are encouraged to follow the signposting put in place to highlight alternative access routes. Please get in touch if you have any questions on this.
