With work on the construction of Castle Quay 2 now underway, we would like to inform all residents and users of the shopping centre about the closure of external spaces to the south multi-storey car park (canal side) and the subsequent closure of the Castle Quay north multi-storey car park, in line with our programme of construction works.
Published: Thursday, 11th April 2019
41 external spaces to the south multi-storey car park will begin to close from Monday 15 April, with the remaining car park unaffected. This is to allow archaeological investigations to take place in advance of works beginning on the development. The entirety of the north multi-storey car park (300 spaces) will be closed from Monday 29 April.
As you will be aware, early preparatory works for the new development at Castle Quay began recently and activity on-site will become more visible in the coming weeks. As part of this, the Castle Quay north multi-storey car park will be demolished ahead of the start of construction works, and the pedestrian footbridge linking the car park to the shopping centre closed at this time. Please be assured that we will be providing further information on the demolition before this commences, and in the interim period works will be internal as we prepare for this.
We are aware that the resulting impact on the provision of parking may be a source of some concern and therefore we want to reassure you that a clear plan is in place to mitigate any adverse impact on the surrounding community. There are some 1,900 spaces provided within a 10 min walk of the shopping centre, and we are confident these will be sufficient to accommodate regular demand:
- Alternative long stay parking will be available at Compton Road (OX16 2PP), Bolton Road and Riverside (OX16 2PA) car parks
- Short stay parking (up to 3 hours) is available at Chamberlaine Court (OX16 2PA) and The Mill (OX16 5QE).
Signage will be in place to highlight these alternative locations, including at the main arterial routes into the town centre and within the shopping centre. The parking charges in these alternative locations are similar in price to the car parks that are closing.
As part of these closures, some blue badge bays will be lost. Alternative blue badge bays are available in Bolton Road and Riverside car parks.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and should you have any further queries, please do speak to the Council on 01295 227008.
All of us at Cherwell District Council are delighted that this exciting new development has taken another step forward, and we are looking forward to working with the local community on the delivery of this scheme. We will share another update shortly.
- Why is it necessary to close this parking?
Early works for the new development at Castle Quay have been ongoing for several weeks and the next stage of works planned involve the demolition of the car park. As part of this, archaeological investigations need to be carried out on the south multi-storey car park, and the north multi-storey car park needs to be demolished in its entirety. This site is where The Light Cinema will sit.
- Where will I park to visit the shopping centre?
Only the external spaces of the south multi-storey car park are affected, so the remainder of the car park remains available. There are alternative car parks available:
Alternative long stay parking will be available at Compton Road (OX16 2PP), Bolton Road and Riverside (OX16 2PA) car parks;
Short stay parking (up to 3 hours) is available at Chamberlaine Court (OX16 2PA) and The Mill (OX16 5QE)
The parking charges in these alternative locations are similar in price to the car parks that are closing.
- Will these alternative car parks be signposted?
Yes. Signage will be in place to highlight these alternative locations, including at the main arterial routes into the town centre and within the shopping centre. Signs will also be placed in the car parks that remain open to direct people to alternative locations should those be full.
- I am a blue badge holder. Are there still spaces for me to park?
Alternative blue badge bays are available in Bolton Road and Riverside car parks.
- Some car parking has already closed. Is this is a different closure?
Yes. The Spiceball Park North car parks shut in February of this year, allowing the contractor to utilise this space to prepare for works.
- How many more car parks will shut?
We are not expecting any further car parking closures, and will keep the length of closures to a minimum where possible.
