Cherwell District Council has teamed up with its leisure centre providers Legacy Leisure and the Oxfordshire Sports and Physical Activity (OXSPA) to offer discounted gym and swim sessions to diabetics.
People can sign up for ten sessions at Bicester Leisure Centre, Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre or Spiceball Leisure Centre in Banbury to boost their fitness and help manage the effects of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Cllr George Reynolds, Cherwell’s deputy leader, said: “Being fit and active brings about health advantages to everyone but is particularly beneficial to people with diabetes as it can help them to manage their symptoms. January is the time of year when lots of people embark on a fitness regime so we want to spur people on their way with a ten discounted gym or swim sessions that will help to get them started.”
According leading charity Diabetes UK, being active can improve diabetes management. Exercise can increase the amount of glucose used by muscles for energy to help reduce sugar levels and improve sleep.
It also helps the body to use insulin more efficiently, reducing the amount which may need to be taken and helps people to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Other benefits include strengthening bones, reducing stress levels and symptoms of anxiety.
To encourage more activity, Cherwell, Legacy Leisure and OXSPA are offering diabetics the choice of three different fitness promotions, each spanning a three month period.
Participants can choose to take part in ten swim sessions, costing at total of £20 – saving £20 on the usual price. Alternatively, they can choose to do ten gym sessions at a cost of £30 instead of the usual price of £101.70. Or for those who can’t decide between the two, they can opt for a gym and swim session for £40, saving £26.50 on the usual price.
The promotion will start from 2 January and must be used within three months. For more information or to sign up speak with a member of the GP referral team at the relevant leisure centre.
