Work has begun to deliver Banbury's largest outstanding housing development which will see the creation of nearly 1,100 homes over the next ten years.
Developers Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes and Bovis Homes have started site assembly work on the Longford Park development on land south of Bankside and east of Oxford Road in Banbury.
The works involve the creation of necessary provisions including drainage, water accessibility and infrastructure which are required for the developers to deliver the site's approved 1,092 homes, primary school and associated amenities.
Cllr Michael Gibbard, lead member for planning, said: "Permission for Longford Park as the site is known, was first granted to JJ Gallagher Limited and Hallam Land Management in 2009. Since then, a lot of work has taken place 'behind the scenes' including the sale of the land to the current developers Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes and Bovis Homes.
"The commencement of work will not change anything with regards to the upcoming Cherwell Local Plan or the on-going debate about Cherwell's five year land supply and ability to meet Government housing targets. We have always included this development in both the local plan and land supply figures so the delivery of these houses will not impact upon either.
"However what it will do is provide people with completed, rather than pending homes to live in."
The development will cover an area of 75.1 hectares and will consist of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, of which approximately 30 per cent will be classed as affordable.
Aside from the properties there will be associated facilities including a primary school, local shops, a pub, community facilities and 2,200 square metres of employment space. A large park/ recreational area will also feature within the development.
Access to the site is currently via the Oxford Road in Bodicote and once the assembly works are complete, work to build the first homes is expected to commence in spring next year. It is expected the first 50 properties will be finished in 2014/ 2015 and that the entire site will be completed by 2023/ 2024.
A second development area, to the south east of the existing site, has also been earmarked for the provision of another 400 homes within the Cherwell Local Plan. However as a planning application has not been submitted for this site, no developer has been appointed and no further details are available.
