| | EU Services Directive
The EU Services Directive aims to open up Europe's services sector to cross-border competition. Its objective is to remove the legal and administrative barriers that make it difficult for businesses to offer their services in another EU country. It came into force on 28 December 2009.
Each EU member state is required to set up a Point of Single Contact (PSC) where businesses can find information and apply online for the relevant licences for a range of services. In the UK this is provided by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the BusinessLink website. When this information or licence involves local government the enquiry will be automatically directed to the appropriate service pages on the local council website. The requires each local authority to upload the list of their relevant web pages to the Local Directgov website in the same way as they already provide service page addresses for Directgov. Most of our applications and payments are processed through our own online system but we use the central BIS facility - ELMS (Electronic Licence Management System) for others The EUGO network shows Points of Contact in other EU countries.
