| | Cropredy battlefield circular walk and village trail
Canal towpath, views of the northern Cherwell valley and the scene of a 1644 Civil War battle.
Cropredy is 5 miles north of Banbury. Please note the walk is 4.5 miles/7 km. Car Parking: Please note there is a 2.2 metre height barrier The Green Scene craft gallery is now the Cinnamon Pantry, a tea shop serving home made pastries and light lunches. Open Wed-Sat, 01295 750028 Circular Walk Direction 3 - "Continue..........(Number 150). At the lock, turn right off the towpath and walk down Appletree Road away from the canal". Direction 4 - There are no longer any gates on this stretch. "At the bend, turn right on to the bridleway past a field gate. Continue ahead up the hill through the field and stop for breath at the top to take in the panoramic view". Direction 5 - "Follow the path down the slope.......next boundary". Direction 6 - "Follow the right fork of the path diagonally across the field and then turn right keeping the hedge on your left. Follow the ......stone barn". Direction 7 - No gate by the stone barn. "Follow the hedgeline passing the barn on your right to the Williamscott Road". Direction 8 -"Turn left and follow the road verge into and through the hamlet of Williamscott (take care along this section as the road can be very busy). Turn right just after the last bungalow on the right, Toad Hall, and continue ahead". Direction 9 - Just past the telephone box, as the road swings left, carry straight on up a gravel drive and through the kissing gate. Go through a field gate and bear slightly left and through another field gate. Continue gradually uphill to the hedge ahead and turn right, soon heading steeply down to a gate at the bottom". Direction 11 - "Ignore the concrete bridge directly to the right and head across the field to the double-gated concrete bridge at Slat Mill Ford. Cross the river here and soon rejoin the canal towpath using the stile beside the brick bridge". Village Trail Number 13 - "The Brasenose Arms ........since 1524. Bear left along the Plantation following the signs for Williamscott. On your left is the Old Coal Wharf". Number 14 - The Old Coal Wharf is no longer an Arts Centre. | |
