How are my business rates calculated?
A
The amount of your bill is calculated by multiplying the rateable value of your property (set by the Valuation Office) by the yearly rate multiplier (set by the government) to give your annual charge.

How can I pay my business rates?
A
You can pay your business rates by direct debit, online, by telephone, post, or in person at any Post Office or Pay Point in the country.

Why has small business rate relief not been applied to my account?
A
You must complete a small business rate relief application form to receive the relief and certain criteria must be fulfilled.

I run the only pub in a small village. What relief can I receive?

You may be eligible for Rural Rate Relief, providing you fulfil certain criteria.

My property is currently vacant. Am I entitled to any reduction from the rates bill?

You must notify the Business Rates Section in writing as soon as the property becomes vacant so that we can apply the appropriate exemption to your account.

What can I do if I think my business rates are too high?

The amount you are charged is dependant on the rateable value of your property.

What happens if I leave a property but I still have the lease?
A
Once you have completely emptied the property you will receive a three month exemption from payment of business rates for shops or offices and six months for industrial properties.

What happens if I don't pay my business rates?
A
Business rates must be paid in accordance with the instalments shown on the bill in order to avoid recovery action.
