Can I run a food business from my home?

Normally the answer is yes. If you do run a food business from your home then it becomes subject to the same food hygiene regulations as any other business and you might have to install additional facilities.

Do you carry out food sampling?
A
Yes - we work closely with the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and take part in national surveys.

Do you provide food hygiene training for people working with food?
A
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to provide food hygiene training. Courses can be booked at South Northamptonshire council (Contact Stuart Wheeldon: 01327 322 282) or with the CIEH (http://www.cieh.org/).

How can I complain about food hygiene?
A
If you have a hygiene complaint regarding a premises serving food to the public please contact the public protection team with the details. An officer will contact you to discuss the matter and investigate.

I think I've got food poisoning who can I report this to?
A
If you think you have food poisoning you must visit your doctor. If food poisoning is confirmed by your doctor, we will receive confirmation from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and will then investigate.

What do I do if I find a foreign object in a food product?
A
If you find a foreign object in your food and if it is a perishable food it's best to freeze the food with the object in place. Also keep all packaging and the receipt.

What does food past its Best Before or Use By date mean?
A
Food older than its "use by" date should not be eaten. If you have bought food that has passed its "use by" date the shop selling it will need to be visited.

What is the purpose of a food inspection?
A
The food team inspect food premises to protect the public and ensure high standards are maintained and promoted.
