What we do with your feedback

We investigate any vehicles reported as abandoned on local roads or property (usually including private property).

The vehicle will be removed if it is causing a public nuisance, is untaxed or if has not been removed by the owner following a specified length of time after a notice of removal has been placed on the vehicle.

We deal with unwanted cars and vans which, if left, can have a detrimental effect on the surroundings. We also aim to remove a possible danger to the public from vehicles in a dangerous condition and those which are unlawfully at large.

We remove about 50% of these abandoned cars after serving the necessary legal notices. The vehicle will be removed if it is causing a public nuisance, is untaxed or if it has not been removed by the owner in the specified length of time after a notice of removal has been placed on the vehicle.

If you are aware of an abandoned vehicle in your area, you can Report it online

Details required

We will need the following information to be able to deal with the vehicle:

  • Make, model, colour and registration number of vehicle
  • The location where the vehicle has been abandoned
  • Is the vehicle in a dangerous condition with fuel cap missing?
  • Is the vehicle taxed?

When reporting a suspected abandoned vehicle we require the details of the person reporting (if possible).

Unwanted vehicles

If you have a vehicle that you no longer want, we are able to remove it for a fee. Please complete and return the 'Vehicle Surrender' form which you can download on the right hand side of this page.

Details required

To remove an unwanted vehicle it will need proof of ownership, e.g. V5 registration document, bill of sale/purchase.

You will be asked to complete a vehicle surrender form that is available under downloads to the right.

How long will it take

We investigate a report of an abandoned vehicle within 24 hours of it being reported.  There then follows a process of service of notices which range from 24 hours to 15 working days.

If the inspector thinks the vehicle is abandoned or dangerous it is removed as soon as possible (normally within 24 hours), providing it is on public open land or the highway.

If no objection has been received in writing then the vehicle will be removed and disposed of.

Due to the legal process that has to be followed when dealing with abandoned vehicles, it is important to note that it can take between 3 - 4 weeks to remove a vehicle.
