Houses in multiple occupation

Houses in multiple occupation, or HMOs, are houses or flats occupied by unrelated people.

Bedsits and shared houses are two of the commonest types. Because HMOs can have large numbers of occupants and are often subject to considerable wear-and-tear, they are subject to extra rules to make sure they are properly run.
