Budgets and spending

Preparing a budget is one of the most important annual jobs. It represents our financial plans for the forthcoming year and allows us to identify the cost of providing its services and calculate how much council tax to charge.

As well as the budget, we also publish a medium term financial strategy.  Where the budget looks one year ahead, the financial strategy looks five years ahead. Whilst it is impossible to be certain about events so far in the future, these forecasts do help to highlight potential problems and issues that may arise, allowing us to manage our finances in a planned way.

Council tax only accounts for a small amount of our income. By far the largest amount comes from central government grants. In addition, we charge for services such as car parking, sports centre activities, planning applications and licences. We also have rental income from properties, income from the sale of goods and investment interest.
