Councillors' allowances

Councillors are entitled to a basic allowance and expenses to cover the cost of fulfilling their duties as a ward councillor.

Councillors are also entitled to a special responsibility allowance for holding certain responsibilities, for example as committee chairman. The levels of the allowance and expenses are set by an Independent Remuneration Panel who report to council each year.

All allowances are subject to tax and National Insurance.

The members allowance scheme (see downloads - right) which is approved by councillors following the report of the Independent Remuneration Panel outlines the allowances councillors are entitled to receive and explains how expenses are paid.

The documents set out the levels of allowance paid to each councillor during the financial year indicated
