Dangerous structures and public safety

We have a responsibility to deal with buildings which have become dangerous due to old age, deterioration or settlement, or by more dramatic causes.

What the service is for

If you are concerned that a building or structure may be dangerous please contact Building Control.  However, if the structure relates to a building site please contact the Health and Safety Executive.

Where necessary, the dangerous structure will be assessed in terms of risk and appropriate action taken to remove the danger.

If any action needs to be taken, every effort will be made to contact the owner first, so it would be helpful if, when reporting the dangerous structure, you can provide the exact location of the property and, if possible, the name of the owner.

If the property is in a dangerous condition, but is not considered to be an immediate danger, a formal Dangerous Structure Notice will be served, but reasonable time will be given to the owner to respond.

We may seek to recover our reasonable administration costs and any contractor charges from the owner of the building/structure.

Details required

An accurate site address / site description will be required in order for us to locate the danger.

How long will it take?

We aim to visit dangerous buildings within 24 hours of being notified of a potential problem. In extreme cases we aim to be on site within 2 hours.
