Consultation to commence on development proposals to help meet Oxford's unmet housing need

A six week consultation on proposals for how Cherwell contributes in accommodating Oxford's unmet housing need commences on Monday, 17 July. The consultation will be supported by a series of public exhibitions focused on the proposed development sites.

From Monday, 17 July until 5pm on Tuesday, 29 August, Cherwell District Council will be welcoming feedback on the Partial Review of the Cherwell Local Plan - a plan to help meet the high level of housing need faced by Oxford city.

The document will outline proposals for the development of seven residential sites in a corridor extending north from Oxford along the A44 to Yarnton and Begbroke and then to the southern edge of Woodstock.

Cllr Colin Clarke, Cherwell's lead member for planning, said: "Due to a lack of development sites and boundary constraints, Oxford City Council is unable to fully meet its housing needs. As such, all of the districts in Oxfordshire have a duty to work cooperatively with each other to accommodate the overall shortfall and meet the housing targets for the area.

"A total of 147 potential sites have been put forward for consideration in Cherwell to accommodate our share of this shortfall.  We have concluded that to meet Oxford's needs, the sites must be closely related to Oxford. We have therefore proposed seven sites for housing that will enable convenient, affordable and sustainable travel opportunities to the city's places of work, study and recreation and to its services and facilities.

"We have consulted twice so far on the preparation of the plan. People now have the opportunity to comment on the specific proposals."

Residents and organisations will be able to submit their feedback using forms available from the council, by email and by post. They will also have the opportunity to attend one of six public exhibitions taking place across the areas where development is proposed during the course of the consultation.
